Robotic Tech to Tackle UGD leaks in Madurai

Madurai: Madurai Corporation has partnered with Chennai-based startup Solinas Integrity to trial EndoBots, an AI-powered robotic technology, to efficiently address persistent underground drainage (UGD) leaks. The trials are underway along the Vaigai Riverbank Road, a hotspot for recurring UGD issues.

Corporation commissioner C Dinesh Kumar highlighted the limitations of conventional leak detection methods, which often require extensive road digging, causing delays, road damage, and water loss. “With Solinas’ robotic technology, we aim to identify leaks without unnecessary excavation,” he said.

EndoBots use advanced diagnostics to detect pipeline leaks precisely, significantly reducing disruption. Solinas staff explained that traditional methods typically involve digging at 15 locations along a 1-km stretch to locate defects. EndoBots, however, can pinpoint issues by sampling less than half the spots, cutting down on time and cost. For water pipelines, the technology supports preventive measures to reduce wastage.

The trial, initiated near the Munthirithoppu lifting station, aligns with the corporation’s broader efforts, including a UGD network survey by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). “Once the survey is complete, this technology can streamline leak repairs,” a senior official said.

Civic activist Vaigai Nathi Rajan welcomed the initiative but stressed timely execution. “Trichy Corporation abandoned similar technology due to cost concerns. Madurai should follow Chennai’s example and adopt it successfully. The pending TCS survey, overdue for eight months, must also be expedited for a comprehensive solution,” he said.

Rajan praised the corporation’s engagement with civic groups, adding, “A successful EndoBot trial could reduce water wastage, road damage, and ensure faster maintenance.”

What is EndoBot?

EndoBot is an AI-powered robotic system designed for efficient pipeline inspection without disruptive excavation.

Capabilities: Operates in water and sewer pipelines of any material, with diameters from 90mm to 1500mm. Covers up to 500 meters in a single run.

Sensors: Equipped with IMU and Laser Profiling Sensors for precision diagnostics, along with a PTZ camera for detailed inspections.

Features: Waterproof 1080p HD camera with LED lighting ensures clear visuals in dark environments. Built to withstand high water pressure and tough conditions.

Predictive Maintenance: Integrated with the Swasth AI dashboard for actionable insights, enabling preventive maintenance.

GIS Mapping: Facilitates accurate pipeline location and maintenance planning through Geographic Information System integration.
