Solinas Integrity News: HMWSSB sets two-month deadline to replace old pipelines, use robots to curb water pollution

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has unveiled a focused action plan to curb contaminated water supply and move towards a pollution-free city.

As part of this initiative, HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy on Saturday chaired a comprehensive review meeting with senior officials at the Jal Mandali headquarters in Khairatabad, directing them to bring contaminated water complaints down to zero.

Shift from firefighting to permanent solutions

The MD observed that although officials respond promptly to daily complaints, recurring issues point to deeper structural problems. He instructed departments to move beyond temporary fixes and adopt permanent, area-specific solutions based on detailed analysis.

Two-year complaint data to guide action

Officials were directed to analyse contaminated water complaints received by the MCC over the past two years to identify hotspots and patterns. Areas with frequent complaints will be prioritised for corrective measures after pinpointing the exact causes of contamination.

Division-wise audit of ageing pipelines

Ashok Reddy asked officials to prepare a division-wise inventory of old and deteriorated pipeline networks, particularly in localities reporting repeated complaints. Based on this assessment, concrete plans are to be drawn up for strengthening or replacing pipelines.

Two-month timeline for reconstruction works

Setting a clear deadline, the MD instructed officials to complete pipeline replacement and reconstruction works within the next two months. He asked them to submit cost estimates immediately, secure approvals without delay, and commence execution on a war footing.

Robotic technology for faster detection

The MD noted that Jal Mandali has already deployed advanced robotic systems to detect contamination and leakages.

The Pollution Identification Machine, also known as the Pipe Inspection Camera System, enables internal inspection of pipelines to quickly locate leak points and sources of contamination, significantly reducing response time.

Ensuring safe drinking water

By combining data-driven planning, replacement of ageing infrastructure, and modern inspection technology, Jal Mandali aims to ensure a reliable supply of safe drinking water and prevent inconvenience to the public due to contaminated water supply.
